“There’s one certainty when it comes to youth development programs that aim to place kids on the path to college: you need a hook. This is especially true for underprivileged children who may not see a college education in their future. Before you can expose them to what college is, what it is not, and how it can change their lives, you must first capture their attention.

For Chucktown Squash Scholars that hook is the sport of squash.”

Why Squash? Squash is an individual sport that promotes self-discipline, self-motivation, self-reliance and competitiveness. This international sport demands a healthy lifestyle of its players and is one of the only “lifetime” sports which can be played at any age. Being selected to play squash, travel to matches and be part of a one-of-a-kind team are powerful incentives for our students to work hard and put in 100% effort on the court and in the classroom.
Through Chucktown Squash Scholars our students make the connection between the effort they put in and their corresponding success rate, a lesson which we reinforce both on and off the squash court.

Chucktown Squash Scholars daily practices are structured to provide a predictable routine for our students to emphasize the value of consistency. Participants are reminded daily that success – in squash, in school, and in life – is only possible through hard work, focus, and commitment.
